How to style yourself for family photos
Don’t worry. Stressing about what to wear for photos is completely natural. You are not alone. We will get through this. Come with me… and you’ll see…
What colour is your world?
First thing to think about; what season is it?
My suggestion is always neutral colours. You can mix a pattern in and coordinate with colours from the pattern but I would still avoid something very busy or bright. Consider if you like warm or cool colours and which ones best match your skin tone. Not sure? Ask your photographer or go with warm colours in summer and fall, cooler colours in winter and spring.
Always ask your photographer if you are unsure! This client had already purchased a dress she wanted to wear. The picture on the left was the picture she sent me when she was looking for options. The picture on the right was what I sent back. Below are some of the photos from that session.
Use textures for style
Again, what season is it? Consider the time of year and use heavier textures in the cooler months. Winter in Calgary often means you NEED a jacket on. Choose a nice wool coat for outdoor photos and wear textures like corduroy, velvet & wool. In the warmer months choose lighter textures like chiffon, cotton and satin.
After discussing with clients what their personal style is, I provide a style board (if requested) with different colour and style options. I encourage them to send photos of outfits they have or to ask as many questions as needed to get the right look.
Layers & Accessories
Always with the layers and I love a good accessory! Layers add interest, dimension and extra outfit changes to your photos. Sweaters, jean jackets or vests work really well to add depth to an outfit. Also adding accessories like hats, sunglasses, suspenders or bracelets and necklaces personalize an outfit. Let your personal style shine through!
This hat though right?
No matchy matchy
My last tip; don’t match everything. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT show up with everyone wearing jeans and navy blue shirts. Use a complimenting colour pallet of 4-5 different colours and switch it up. Coordination is key… but no matchy matchy. Bad.
