5 Tips to help prep for your family photo session
Preparing for your family photo session doesn’t have to be stressful. Your photographer can give you tips and tricks for what to wear and some photographers (myself included) can provide a style board or completely style the entire family depending on your comfort level.
All my packages include a style board (if desired) and access to my client closet with personalized styles and colours based on your personal style, and the location you choose.
I’ve got all that covered, here’s what you can do to prepare:
Photo-ready hair, make-up and nails
Momma, if this isn’t the best time to pamper yourself then what is? Take some time before your session to schedule an appointment to touch up your roots, have your nails done and even have your makeup done. Your photos are an investment. Invest in yourself as well. I style my families around what mom wears because well… let’s be real she’s the one doing all the work for these photos… most partners and kids are just there for the bribes :)
Plan your photo friendly outfits
If you are not being styled by your photographer, plan your outfits in advance. You don’t want to be rushing around on the day of the session, stressing about what to wear! When selecting outfits, my suggestion is that mom pick out her outfit, try it on and make sure she’s comfortable in it, and then coordinate all the other outfits around moms outfit. Bring specific props or special toys with you to the session
If your child has a special toy, stuffie or kitchen utensil they take everywhere with them… bring it! Let’s remember that odd obsession with the whisk.
This is his bug vacuum. You heard me right, bug vacuum. It literally goes everywhere with him.
Review everything your photographer has sent you
My family clients get a Tips & Tricks guide, style board (if desired) and location maps if I choose the location. Pay attention to them. Read them over. Ask questions!
Prep the kids
Prepare them in advance for what will be happening at the session. Get them excited about it! Let them know they may get a treat if they listen to the nice lady :) If they don’t, that’s ok, we can roll with that too, sometimes kids just aren’t into photos.
Lastly, have fun with it! Your kids will grow up fast. They may yell at each other (or you), ignore you or chase each other around, but this is the last day you will be this young. Embrace the chaos!
